The Mental Model Book

Written by Utkarsh Amitabh & Varya Srivastava

Clarity is power and mental models are tools for clear thinking. At Network Capital, our mission is to help you build your category of one.

As we embark upon that journey, it is important to filter signal from noise and take smart decisions at scale. We spend our lives memorizing facts and figures but barely create time to think things through. It is our hope that this book helps you strengthen your personal operating system by providing a safe space for clear thinking and micro-experiments.

Using these 40 mental models, you start your journey towards compounding clarity. With practice you will internalize them. Treat this book like a boardgame – tinker, experiment, play.

For Network Capital Subscribers - you have complete access to this book and our weekly discussions on them. We look forward to doing a deeper dive on these ideas in the Network Capital Summer School and CEO & ‘I don’t know what I want to do with my life’ Fellowship

NC Summer School | Starts June 1, 2021

Network Capital Summer School is designed for school students to spark their love for learning. Our focus will be writing, public speaking, critical thinking and deep reading, timeless skills that will serve them well for the rest of their lives.  Our three-pronged approach is -

First, thinking deeply. Let’s call it second order thinking.
In our modern lives of perennial distractions, the ability to be indistractable (a term coined by author Nir Eyal) is our super power.

Second, writing clearly. Network Capital would not exist if we didn’t learn how to communicate complex ideas through the power of words. It is an acquired skill honed with practice Almost every leader worth remembering writes well.

Third, speak purposefully. As students embark upon their career trajectories, they will learn that complex coordination is the single most important charter for getting stuff done. They will need to learn to inspire people, give tough feedback and do so with empathy.

CEO Fellowship & ‘I don’t know what I want to do with my life’ Fellowship | Starts July 10, 2021

It is hard to figure out what one wants to do with one’s life amidst the cacophony of everyday life complemented by our inner voice that seems to be running pillar to post at breakneck speed.

There is no formula for self-discovery. There have, however, been some attempts in the form of psychometric tests, algorithms and guided medical trials. No success stories so far but perhaps that isn’t such a bad thing. It will be a tad disappointing to know that our professional futures can be charted out by rudimentary algorithms. That said, are these rudimentary algorithms any worse than current ways of figuring out what next? Who knows.

We don’t want to make this a theoretical discussion. Let’s focus on figuring out what to do with this one crazy life that we have.
Most of life is a search for who and what needs you the most. The CEO & ‘I don’t know what I want to do with my life’ Fellowship help you with this journey.
